How to identify the affected AC adapter.
HOUSTON, Dec. 5, 1996 - In cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), Compaq Computer Corporation (NYSE:CPQ) today announced that it is conducting a voluntary worldwide recall on certain AC adapters supplied with its Armada 4100 notebook computers, supplied with its convenience bases or shipped as options or spare parts to resellers. The AC adapters, which may have defective connector pins, could potentially pose an electrical shock hazard. The Armada 4100 computer itself is not affected by the recall.
The recalled AC adapters included with the Armada 4100 family of products were sold worldwide during the period September 23 through November 20, 1996. Only AC adapters with both part number 217984-001 on the bar code label and three hollow connector pins in the recessed male connector on the power adapter are affected.
This action will not have a material financial impact to the company.
Compaq, which reported the possible hazard to the CPSC, identified the potential problem through its own internal manufacturing testing processes. The company has not received any customer reports of injury caused by the AC adapters, and the voluntary recall is being conducted to prevent the possibility of injury.
To avoid the possibility of injury, users should disconnect the AC power cord from the wall outlet prior to inspecting for this problem, or prior to servicing the AC adapter. In addition, customers should stop using the affected AC adapters and contact Compaq for a replacement.
Owners of the Armada 4100 AC adapters who have questions about the recall or need help in identifying whether their AC adapter is part of the recall should call Compaq at 1-800-322-9515. Compaq will ship replacements for the recalled AC adapters at no charge.
